1996年，学校同窗的主唱麦可与布莱德在麦可的卧室型迷你录音室录下第一首歌，联合公园乐团就这样在南加州播下音乐的种子，两人随后结识鼓手罗伯，过了一阵子，麦可与同窗在帕莎迪纳市艺术中心学院研习绘画的DJ乔瑟夫搭上线，念加州大学洛杉矶分校的布莱德碰巧跟贝斯手菲尼克斯同为住校室友，菲尼克斯曾在大学毕后曾一度离团，一年后重新归队，组团拼图中的最后一块就是来自亚利桑那州的主唱查斯特，当时乐团正在面向社会公开招聘主音歌手，查斯特的出现吓跑了所有的竞争者，他火暴如炸药般的咆哮，确定了他在乐团中的主唱位置。并没有相对固定的流派，而是融合了说唱、重金属、嘻哈乐以及电子舞曲等多种风格。值得一提的是，乐团在歌词中强烈地反映了当代E时代年轻人的心声，剖析了他们的迷惘、苦闷和愤怒，掏出了他们最底层的呐喊。而在当今这个"脏话连篇"的年代，乐团的歌词却非常干净，没有任何漫骂而非空洞无物粗口横流，这是在当今摇滚乐坛是少见的。
