The CAC 40 fell 1.1% to close at 7,350 on Thursday, marking its third consecutive session of losses and reaching eleven-week lows as traders adjusted to increasing hawkish expectations for the ECB and corporate earnings results. After an unexpected rise in Euro Area inflation to 2%, up from 1.7% and exceeding the 1.9% forecast, investors are betting that the ECB will maintain a cautious stance on rate cuts, bolstered by resilient economic growth, and the core rate holding steady at 2.7%, contrary to expectations of a dip to 2.6%. On the corporate front, TotalEnergies shares dropped 3.2% to their lowest level since February after reporting lower Q3 net income and sales. BNP Paribas shares also slumped 4.8% to a three-week low despite posting higher Q3 net income and revenue. In contrast, Société Générale shares surged 11.7%, hitting their highest level since June after exceeding Q3 earnings expectations. For the month of October, the CAC 40 shed 3.7%.

The yield on France's 10-year OAT rose to above 3.1%, the highest in over three months, and tracking a rise in European benchmarks, as higher-than-expected inflation and GDP growth in the Euro Area, spurred investor bets that the ECB will continue a gradual approach to rate cuts, avoiding large reductions. Annual inflation rate in the Eurozone rose to 2% from 2021-lows of 1.7% and above forecasts of 1.9%. The core rate remained at 2.7% although markets were expecting it would fall to 2.6%. In France, the harmonised inflation also increased to 1.5%. Early in the week, stronger-than-expected economic growth also supported these outlooks. The Eurozone economy expanded by 0.4% qoq in Q3, double the growth of Q2 and exceeding forecasts of 0.2%. The French economy also expanded 0.4%, beating expectations of 0.3%. Markets have now fully priced in a 25 bps cut in the ECB’s deposit rate for December, marking the 4th reduction after cuts in October, September, and June.

In France, preliminary estimates showed that annual consumer inflation inched up to 1.2% in October 2024, compared to market forecasts and the prior month’s 1.1%. Meanwhile, producer prices continued to fall, marking the tenth consecutive month of deflation, with a 7% year-on-year decrease in September, following a 6.3% drop the previous month. On the corporate front, BNP Paribas shares slumped 6.1% to a three-week low despite posting higher Q3 net income and revenue. TotalEnergies also dropped, with shares down 2.8% to its lowest level since February after reporting lower Q3 net income and sales. In contrast, Societe Generale shares surged 8.3%, hitting its highest level since June, after exceeding Q3 earnings expectations.
