The S&P/TSX Composite Index dropped 1.4% to close at 24,157 on Thursday, reaching a three-week low as commodity producers weighed on the index and international sentiment remained cautious amid an uninspiring earnings season that fueled broad sell-offs. Leading the decline were major mining stocks, Agnico Eagle fell 2.1% despite a strong third quarter, as gold prices retreated from record highs. Other key players, Barrick Gold and Wheaton Precious Metals, declined by 3.5% and 2.1%, respectively. The energy sector also pressured the Toronto exchange, with Cenovus leading losses, down 3.4%, following a disappointing third-quarter report. Meanwhile, mega-caps RBC, Shopify, and Brookfield also underperformed with losses ranging from 1.8% to 2.1%. Economically, preliminary estimates suggest the Canadian economy grew by 0.3% in September, closing the third quarter with 0.2% growth. The TSX posted a 0.7% gain in October.
