The Nikkei 225 Index climbed 0.5% to above 39,500 on Friday, rising for the third straight session and reaching its highest levels in two weeks. The broad-based Topix Index also gained 0.3% to 2,720. Those moves came even after Wall Street tumbled overnight following hotter-than-expected inflation data and disappointing jobless claims numbers in the US. Recent weakness in the yen also helped Japanese equities, amid expectations that the Bank of Japan will delay further rate hikes while the Federal Reserve could potentially skip a rate cut in the coming months. Fast Retailing jumped 2% after posting a record annual earnings driven by the strong global performance of its Uniqlo clothing brand. Meanwhile, Seven & I Holdings dropped 2.2% on reports that the company will restructure its supermarket food and specialty store businesses. Over the week, the Nikkei and Topix indexes are set to gain about 2.5% and 1%, respectively.
