Figures showed a shift from contraction to growth, with the economy expanding 0.7% quarter-on-quarter in Q2 2025 and topping estimates of a 0.6% increase, reinforcing optimism over the growth outlook. Separately, South Korea’s foreign exchange reserves rose to $416.3 billion in August from $411.3 billion in July, led by higher securities holdings and a jump in deposits, strengthening South Korea’s external buffers and easing fiscal risk concerns. Adding to the momentum, the government announced a KRW 570 billion emergency financial aid for the steel and aluminum sectors to mitigate the impact of a 50% US tariff, comprising targeted low-interest lending facilities and interest-rate support measures for SMEs.

South Korea’s economy grew 0.7% quarter-on-quarter in the three months to June 2025, 0.1 percentage point higher than the figure given in the advance estimate. That indicates a sharp reversal from a 0.2% contraction in the first quarter. Private consumption rose 0.5%, supported by higher spending on goods like motor vehicles and services such as health services. Government consumption increased 1.2% on the back of expanded health care benefits. However, construction investment declined 1.2%, with both building and civil engineering activity falling, while facilities investment also dropped 2.1% amid reduced purchases of machinery and transport equipment. Exports rose 4.5%, driven by semiconductors, petroleum products, and chemicals, while imports climbed 4.2%, mainly due to stronger demand for energy items like crude oil and natural gas.

South Korea's foreign exchange reserves increased to $416.3 billion in August 2025, up from $411.3 billion in a month earlier. The rise was due by higher securities holdings, which climbed to $366.2 billion from $365.1 billion, and deposits, which grew to $25 billion from $21.3 billion. Special Drawing Rights (SDRs) also edged up to $15.8 billion from $15.7 billion. Meanwhile, gold reserves held steady at $4.8 billion, as did the IMF reserve position at $4.5 billion. Despite these strong reserves, the central bank continues to face challenges from fluctuating currency markets and external economic pressures.
