Retail sales in Taiwan fell by 0.6% year-on-year in May 2025, following a 0.6% slump in the previous month. Sales continued to contract for household appliances and goods (-2.8% vs -2.6% in April), fuel and related products (-8.4% vs -5.1%), motor vehicles and motorcycles (-18% vs -5.2%), and retail trade not in stores (-1.2% vs -0.3%). Additionally, sales slowed for food, beverages and tobacco (9.4% vs 10.6%), construction materials (3.9% vs 7.6%), and other retail (3.5% vs 11.8%). In contrast, sales growth accelerated in general merchandise (6.4% vs 2.5%) and pharmaceutical, medical goods and cosmetics (3.4% vs 1.1%). On a monthly basis, retail activity grew by 2.6% in May, rebounding from a 2.1% drop in the previous month.
