Orders for Taiwanese exports surged 18.5% year-on-year in May 2025 to USD 57.9 billion, marking the highest level in over two years and following a 19.8% increase in April. The strong growth was fueled by robust demand for information and communication products, which jumped 29.5% (up from 20.0% in April), as well as machinery (6.8% vs. 5.8%) and other goods (32.7% vs. 22.0%). However, momentum slowed in orders for electronic products (27.7% vs. 35.0%), electrical machinery (7.7% vs. 9.2%), and optical and photographic instruments (2.8% vs. 4.2%). Meanwhile, declines were recorded in orders for mineral products (-30.4% vs. -8.7%), chemicals (-17.4% vs. 0.0%), textile products (-8.8% vs. -1.1%), plastics (-14.3% vs. -8.8%), and transport equipment (-6.5% vs. 3.3%). By destination, the largest increases came from the United States (40.1%), followed by ASEAN markets (25.1%) and Japan (23.2%).

The Central Bank of Taiwan kept its key discount rate unchanged at 2% during its June 2025 meeting, in line with market expectations. The decision reflects ongoing global economic uncertainties, a stable domestic outlook, and continued easing of inflationary pressures. Taiwan’s economy outperformed expectations in the first half of 2025, supported by strong global demand for emerging technologies and early inventory stocking by foreign firms in anticipation of potential US tariff hikes. The central bank maintained its GDP growth forecast at 3.05% for 2025. Meanwhile, the inflation rate from January to May 2025 rose at an average annual rate of 2.04%, while core CPI increased by 1.65%. The central bank projects full-year CPI and core CPI growth at 1.81% and 1.69%, respectively—both lower than the 2024 figures of 2.18% and 1.88%. The Bank cautioned that inflation risks remain, citing commodity price swings, domestic service costs, and unpredictable weather as potential pressures.

The Broad M2 Money Supply in Taiwan rose by 3.33% year-on-year to a four-month low of TWD 64,894 billion in May 2025, slowing from a 3.88% growth in the previous month. The deceleration was primarily driven by a slowdown in the growth of bank loans and investments. Considering the first five months of the year, the average annual growth rate was 4.45%.

Exports from Taiwan soared by 38.6% year-on-year to a record peak of USD 51.74 billion in May 2025, following a 29.9% gain in the previous month. The figure marked the strongest annual growth in export activity since July 2010, driven by a significant rise in shipments for information, communication and auto-video products (111.1%). Other major contributors included electronic components (28.4%), machinery (7.7%), and base metals and articles of base metal (5.7%). Conversely, shipments fell for plastics and rubber & articles (-4.7%). Among key trading partners, exports jumped to the USA (87.4%), followed by ASEAN countries (52.3%), Japan (17.5%), and the Mainland China & Hongkong (16.6%). Considering January to May, exports totaled USD 229.96 billion, up 24.3% from the same period last year.
