The BSE Sensex fell 153 points, or 0.2%, to 82,416 in morning trade on Wednesday, snapping the previous session’s gains as traders turned cautious amid ongoing US–India trade negotiations. Concerns over accelerating US inflation and President Trump’s renewed threats to impose 30% tariffs on imports from the EU and Mexico added to global inflationary pressures, weighing on investor sentiment. Caution also prevailed ahead of key corporate earnings, with companies such as Tech Mahindra and ITC Hotels set to report results later in the day. However, the decline was partially offset by positive trade data, as India’s trade deficit narrowed in June 2025 for the first time in three months. The auto and metal sectors were among the main drags on the index. Notable laggards included Tata Motors (-1.1%), Tata Steel (-1.0%), Mahindra & Mahindra (-0.9%), Asian Paints (-0.8%), and JSW Steel (-0.8%). Meanwhile, Tech Mahindra and ITC Hotels each rose 0.4% ahead of their earnings announcements.
