Household spending in Sweden fell by 1.2% month-on-month in May 2025, reversing a downwardly revised 0.4% gain in the previous month. This marked the sharpest contraction since July 2022, driven by broad-based declines across key categories, including food and beverages (-3.1% vs 1.4% in April), transport, retail sales, and motor vehicle services (-2% vs 2%), furniture, furnishings, household equipment and consumables (-2.4% vs 2.4%), and recreation and culture, goods and services (-3.9% vs 0.1%). At the same time, spending on clothing and footwear continued to fall sharply (-10.2% vs -3.1%). In contrast, consumption rebounded for housing, electricity, gas, and heating (0.9% vs -0.8%), post and communications (3% vs -3.1%), and other goods and services (1.9% vs -3%). Spending also accelerated for restaurants, cafes, hotels, and other accommodation services (3.3% vs 0.3%). On a yearly basis, household consumption eased notably to 0.6% from an upwardly revised 2.7% in April 2025.
