The S&P/TSX Composite Index climbed 0.2% to close at 26,569 on Monday, as easing Middle East tensions and renewed hopes of de-escalation at the Iran–Israel front allowed investors to refocus on the G7 summit in Alberta and looming Fed policy decisions. Information-technology names led the advance, helped by global peers such as Meta and Palantir, lifting the sector 1.3%, while financials also outperformed, up 0.7%, with heavyweights RBC, Brookfield, BMO and Scotiabank each gaining around 1%. Bombardier jumped 2.4% after announcing a defence-technology partnership with France’s Safran. On the economic data front, Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation reported May’s six-month trend in housing starts was flat at 243,407 units, and MLS-recorded home sales rose 3.6% from April, the first uptick since last November, underscoring steady domestic demand. Energy shares lagged as oil prices slipped on reports of resumed Iran talks.
