Tanzania's annual inflation rate ticked up to a three-month high of 3.3% in June 2025 from 3.2% in the preceding month. Main upward pressure came from prices of food & non-alcoholic beverages (7.3% vs 5.6% in May); alcoholic beverages & tobacco (3.5% vs 3.4%) and education (3.1% vs 3.2%). On a monthly basis, consumer prices rose by 0.3% in June, following a 0.1% increase in the prior month.

The decision aims to support economic growth while keeping inflation below the 5% target. The annual inflation rate remained unchanged at 3.2% in May 2025, well within the central bank’s target range, and has hovered around 3% since the policy rate was introduced in January 2024. Meanwhile, Tanzania’s economy is projected to grow by approximately 6% in 2025, up from 5.5% the previous year, bolstered by the commencement of electricity generation at the Julius Nyerere Hydropower Dam.

Tanzania's central bank kept its benchmark interest rate at 6% for the fourth consecutive policy meeting on April 4th, 2025, in a bid to keep inflation below its 5% target. The annual inflation rate edged higher to 3.2% in February 2025 from 3.1% in the previous month, marking the highest level since November 2023, but still well within the target range. Inflation has remained around 3% since the central bank introduced its policy rate in January 2024. Meanwhile, Tanzania's economy is expected to grow by about 6% in 2025, higher than the estimated 5.4% growth for 2024.

The biggest increases in prices were seen for miscellaneous goods & services (+6.3%); housing & utilities (+4.1%); transportation (+3.8%); food & non-alcoholic beverages (+3.3%) and education (+3.1%). On a monthly basis, consumer prices rose by 0.4% in November, after a 0.3% decrease in the prior month.
