The annual urban inflation rate in Egypt cooled down to 14.9% in June 2025 from 16.8% in May, coming in below the expected 16.2% and breaking a three-month uptrend. Food and beverage prices eased, but fuel costs remained sharply elevated after the Egyptian government raised petrol, diesel, and other energy prices by up to 15% in April. Meanwhile, Egypt’s parliament has approved a series of changes to the value-added tax (VAT) law in late June, which could lead to a rise in the prices of goods such as cigarettes, alcoholic beverages and crude oil. On a monthly basis, the CPI edged down by 0.1% in June, marking the first deflationary reading since May 2024, after a 1.9% increase in the previous month.
