The S&P Global Egypt PMI rose to 49.2 in October 2025 from 48.8 in September, pointing to a slower contraction in the country’s non-oil private sector and the softest decline in business activity in eight months. New orders fell at the weakest pace in five months, supported by tentative signs of stabilizing market conditions and stronger performance in the manufacturing sector. Output volumes contracted slightly, while purchasing activity and employment were broadly stable, following months of steady decline. On the cost front, input prices rose at the fastest rate in five months, driven by the sharpest increase in wages since October 2020, as firms adjusted pay to reflect higher living costs. Meanwhile, business confidence strengthened compared with September but remained below the long-term trend, as firms remained cautious about persistent cost pressures and uncertain economic conditions.

Egypt raised fuel prices on Friday for the second time this year, the official gazette reported, as part of efforts to cut subsidies and narrow the budget deficit. The hike ranged between 10.5% and 12.9% across various petroleum products, following a nearly 15% increase in April. Gasoline prices rose sharply, with 80-octane now at 17.75 pounds per liter, 92-octane at 19.25 pounds, and 95-octane at 21 pounds. Diesel, widely used for transport and agriculture, climbed by 2 pounds to 17.50 pounds per litre. The Petroleum Ministry said domestic fuel prices will be frozen for at least a year after this adjustment, part of broader fiscal reforms under the IMF program, which aims to stabilize the economy, reduce public spending on energy subsidies, and bring domestic prices closer to actual costs.

S&P Global upgraded Egypt’s credit rating to ‘B’ on Friday, citing ongoing reforms that have led to a sharp rebound in GDP growth. Meanwhile, Fitch affirmed Egypt’s rating at ‘B’, highlighting the country’s relatively high growth potential and strong support from international partners. Fitch last upgraded Egypt’s rating to ‘B’ in November 2024, when rising foreign investment and tighter monetary conditions helped strengthen the country's finances. S&P’s recent upgrade is the first since Egypt began receiving financial support around March 2024. S&P also noted that Egypt’s strategic importance has been elevated by the ongoing conflict in Gaza, contributing to continued financial backing from Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) members and other nations. As of now, Standard & Poor’s credit rating for Egypt stands at ‘B’ with a stable outlook, while Moody’s rating remains at ‘Caa1’ with a positive outlook.

The annual urban inflation rate in Egypt eased for the fourth consecutive month to 11.7% in September 2025, down from 12.0% in August, after reaching a four-month high in May due to rising fuel prices. This marked the lowest inflation rate since March 2022. On a monthly basis, the Consumer Price Index (CPI) climbed 1.8% in September, accelerating from a 0.4% rise in August.
