The number of foreign tourists arrivals in Sri Lanka climbed by 21.8% year-on-year to 138,241 in June 2025, accelerating from an 18.5% growth in the previous month. This marked the largest increase in tourist arrivals so far this year, with India (27.4%) remaining the top tourist source market, followed by the United Kingdom (8.4%), China (6.4%), Australia (5.3%), Pakistan (4.9%), and Bangladesh (4.2%). Considering the first six months of the year, the number of foreign tourists rose by 15.6% compared to the corresponding period of the previous year, reaching 1,168,044. On a monthly basis, foreign tourist arrivals gained by 4%.

Sri Lanka’s current account surplus widened to $938 million in the first quarter of 2025, reaching a record high, up from $728 million a year earlier, mainly driven by a rise in the services surplus to $1,220 million from $1,155 million and a jump in the secondary income surplus to $1,773 million from $1,505 million. Meanwhile, the primary income deficit narrowed to $515 million from $712 million. Offsetting these gains, the goods deficit widened to $1,540 million from $1,219 million in Q1 2024.

Sri Lanka’s trade deficit widened to USD 472.5 million in May 2025 from USD 393.3 million in the same month a year earlier. Imports rose 7.3% year-on-year to USD 1,507.2 million, driven by a sharp increase in consumer goods (+69.6%), notably a dramatic 1,610.6% surge in personal vehicle imports, and investment goods (+16.8%). Exports increased 2.3% to USD 1,034.7 million, mainly supported by higher shipments in agricultural products (+15.7%), while exports industrial goods declined (-1.1%).

Consumer prices in Sri Lanka's capital, Colombo, decreased by 0.6% year-on-year in May 2025, easing slightly from 0.7% drop in the previous month. This marked the tenth consecutive month of deflation, though the softest drop in nine months, as prices moderated for food and non-alcoholic beverages (4.3% v 5.2%). Moreover, price declines eased for both housing and utilities (-7.9% vs -8.8%) and transportation (-5.5% vs -6.5%), while prices for furnishing and equipment remained the same (-0.6%). In contrast, prices for clothing and footwear (3.9% vs 3.7%) and restaurants and hotels (1.4% vs 0.4%) increased at a faster pace. On a monthly basis, consumer prices rose by 0.9% in May from 0.8% in April.
